Jessica Bowen changed my life. And I don’t say that lightly. She’s a big reason why my second child exists — why I felt brave enough to love and live again even at the risk of more loss after multiple traumatic deaths of loved ones. She has patiently, wisely, and compassionately explored the full spectrum of the human experience with me. After I had to cancel sessions with a different grief therapist because of how bored and uncaring she seemed, Jessica’s approach was a welcome cradle for my heart. She holds space for all feelings and knows exactly when to listen, when to give empathetic cushioning, and when to respectfully offer other perspectives, possible approaches, and questions to mull over to further stretch my exploration of my journey. It’s clear her clients matter deeply to her and that she truly *gets* it (from so much of her own personal grief work). Something she clarified to me in our first session that really stood out to me and still echoes in my head two years later is that her role was not to make my grief better or go away, it was to help me “dance with grief” in a whole new way, knowing it will stay in my life forever. I can truly say that is what she has done and my relationship with death — and with life — has changed forever.
After suffering a hard loss of loved ones, a few friends encouraged me to seek grief therapy to help with healing. I have never had therapy, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I did expect a level of compassion and empathy. Jessica did not create a safe space for my vulnerable state. She was sharp tongued and lacked empathy, warmth, and kindness. If anything, she gave me a setback and stunted my healing. She completely turned me off therapy. Her website description is lovely. It does not match who she is.
