I was a member about 11 years ago. I had some hardship and went back to art awakenings (now resilient health) for a safe place to have an outlet during trauma therapy like before. This time, there's a whole new staff. Courbyne is such a sweet soul. There's only one Kendal & they're so blessed to have these two. Freddie is a sweetheart & a great peer support. But the fact that they have a male narcissist working a majority of the scheduled open studio time with clients who have been through past traumas already with men of that type, makes the environment not a safe space for us to be. Then they hire new staff that make degrading, disrespectful comments about the mental function of clients, just totally ruins the potential this type of program has to be. I really could have used this program in this time of my life but it's not a healthy environment when those types of people maintain their employment, despite their behavior towards clients. When I assertively approached this and confronted how uncomfortable it made me. The response I received was, "okay I'll go ahead and drop you." But the world of narcissists see no wrong in what they do & really no one else matters. The world has no accountability & since covid, anyone willing to show up gets, as well as keeps their jobs. I've not really touched any arts or crafts projects since I was dropped for assertively stating my concerns and how it makes me uncomfortable. I just pretty much lay in depression as the days go by hoping one day these days will come to an end. But at least I'm safe in this bed without being in an environment where narcissists are getting paid to inflict stress and harm onto me.

One has to understand that the services are much broader than the art studios, for starters. And the art program is second to none. There is nothing else comparable, even if another thing were self pay. Things I’m frustrated about include the new web design after the name change from PSA. Everyone still calls it PSA anyway, but regardless the new website literally provides no helpful information because it is far too vague. And this is coming from someone enrolled in a program. As far as the art studios go, each has its own vibe, as one would expect. Don’t kid yourself, it’s not just art and access to many materials and learning opportunities. Twice a day the staff hands out a worksheet, usually taken from a quite dated workbook, and the participants have to fill it out or go over with staff. The problem with this is that so many times the topic is not relevant to what the person is experiencing right then (though staff is pretty good with adapting) or, what’s far worse, is that the information is dated. It is NOT evidence based because the workbook is so old that the most current research in mental health treatment is not considered. So participants are often inundated with treatment protocol that can actually be harmful — and no one in the staff feels empowered enough to address it with the higher ups. Finally, the topics are repeated way too often, in literally the exact same worksheets. All told though, I’ve gained a lot from the program and I hope to continue doing so. I just wish this one aspect of the lack of evidence based treatment would change even just a little. Do remember, of course, it’s not a compleeeeeeeeete lack, but for me, enough of one.

Art Awakenings is a place where anyone can go to enjoy true art. The various mediums and colors bring forth life to the gallery. Art coordinator D.W. creates a flawless display by paying close attention to detail and cares about the display and the audience who comes to view the art. The staff is caring and transparent offering assistance to those who may have any questions. The atmosphere is one to experience.

This place is always fun to come to on the 1st Fridays. The artists are always freindly and prices on their work are appropiate and affordable and actually probably far less then they are worth. It is very cool to see them in their natural habitat of where they create their work. An always stop on 1st Friday.
