I would encourage parents to be very clear about expectations before starting with this therapist, especially in situations involving separated or high-conflict co-parenting. In our experience, what began as child-focused play therapy gradually expanded into involvement in co-parenting dynamics and communication between parents. I had initially requested that the work remain focused solely on the child, but over time the therapist became involved in areas that felt closer to mediation or coordination between parents. In a high-conflict setting, that shift made an already sensitive situation more difficult to manage. There were also instances where the therapist became engaged in ongoing disagreements between parents, which, in my view, blurred the line between child therapy and broader family or co-parenting work. Ultimately, we were advised that continuing therapy would require involvement of a third-party coordinator or similar structure, which was a significant change from the initial understanding. I believe the therapist cares about children and intends to be helpful. However, based on my experience, I would strongly recommend that parents—particularly those with court orders or structured communication systems—clearly define the therapist’s role, boundaries, and level of parent involvement upfront. This may be a better fit for families seeking a more integrated or co-parenting-involved approach, but for strictly child-focused therapy, clarity at the outset is essential.

Words that come to mind when I think of Diane: real, non judgmental, caring, experienced, skillful, flexible, reliable. Although she worked with my daughter mainly, she and I checked in regularly and occasionally, my husband and I would meet with her to discuss family dynamics, school challenges, etc. She was wonderful always, truly.
