The Johns Hopkins Hospital Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is a psychiatric hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland. While some clients have reported negative experiences with communication and medication management from certain psychiatrists and staff, others have praised the skilled, knowledgeable, and empathetic care provided by individual therapists, particularly an LCSW. The Adolescent Behavioral Unit has been commended for its dedication, expertise, and compassionate team, offering invaluable guidance on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and supportive approaches during high-stress situations. However, some reviews indicate significant issues with patient evaluation, medication side effects, staff attentiveness, cleanliness, and administrative processes, leading to distress and a feeling of being worse off after treatment.

I was initially hesitant to post a review because I understand that clinicians are often overwhelmed, but especially after reading about others' experiences, I felt obligated to share mine. My therapist (LCSW) was great, she seemed very skilled, knowledgeable, and empathetic. I also saw two different psychiatrists. On multiple occassions I tried contacting them with important, time sensitive concerns: a) my insurance needed more information before a prescription could be filled, and later b) I was having bad side effects from a different medication and needed guidance. In both cases, they never replied, even after multiple follow-ups and weeks of waiting. This was the deal-breaker that pushed me to find a new provider. One of the doctors also made some remarks about certain medications that didn't align with the peer-reviewed evidence, so that seemed strange and concerning. I'm not a doctor but I have a public health background. Johns Hopkins is a distinguished institution, but this department does not do justice to the name.

Being inpatient at meyer 3 was the worst experience of my life. Sitters who are supposed to be watching unpredictable potentially aggressive patients were often asleep or playing on their phones using Instagram and tik Tok. The level of psychiatric care was completely unsatisfactory. Bathrooms always dirty with feces on the toilet seats. The doctors were just as bad as the staff. Telling you that they are working with you as a team and that nothing would be prescribed or changed unless I was agreeable to it. Well that was a complete lie. They do what they want and if you don't want certain medications which in some cases can cause more harm to your then good to your body. If you refuse the medicine then you are not compliant and have you forceable admitted instead of being a voluntary patient they can go before a judge and make it involuntary for at least 72 hours. Now I know 72 hours doesn't sound too long but you have to actually wait for the court date with a judge which state law allows up five business days before your court date. I went there looking for help and instead was put through a nightmare. I'm still waking up in the middle of the night shaking because I dream that I'm still there.

actually just an institutionalized system to scam and prey on human beings in distress and pain. This system is incredibly inefficient when they cannot even evaluate their patients correctly. I presented myself as a patient with a central nervous system dysfunction. I have a herniated disc (or a few…), psoriasis, and generalized anxiety. How are they even supposed to allocate resources efficiently when they CANNOT even accurately, concisely evaluate their patients? This. Is beyond me. Hello? I cannot even feel my hands or feet. My toes and fingers cramp up. My muscles tremor out of my own volition. Hello? I cannot breathe. My chest hurts when I take a deep breath. Hello? Hello? They CAUSED ME THE WORST PAIN in my entire life by putting me on medications that worsen tremors, and chest pain. I will never respect Johns Hopkins ever again. I guess I was too pure to believe all the research that they are producing. What good is it for if Your system is like this? Why is it that in a room FULL of incredibly intelligent people, they are STILL operating this DUMBFOUNDED System?

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the Johns Hopkins Adolescent Behavioral Unit. The level of dedication, expertise, and compassion shown by the team truly exceeded all our past experiences. The guidance on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was invaluable, enhancing our understanding and empowering us to be better parents. The team's approach, especially in high-stress situations, was tremendously supportive, helping us navigate challenging times with more confidence. We are deeply appreciative of the hope and direction given to us, feeling incredibly fortunate to have had such supportive care. Thank you to everyone at the unit for their time, efforts, and energy. Your work really does make a difference, and we are profoundly grateful.

These people will be so passive aggressive. I was admitted to this hospital for mental health issues. If someone you know needs help, do NOT send them here. The nurses are petty and do not care. Security is awful to you. I was called insightful names by Security and they refused to bring a a Security supervisor. Please, I will say it again, you have seen the other bad reviews and hopefully you see mine. NEVER SEND SOMEONE HERE. Thank you. Good luck.

We went here for a second opinion. It was a waste of time, money and energy. Our psychiatrist in Vienna, VA was much more helpful and able to think beyond a label that doctors put on people. Scheduling the appointment was terrible (I should have taken that as an indicator). We weren't billed until 20 months after the date of service. Not to mention the bill was incorrect. A year later and 10 calls into patient relations department, it is still not resolved. I use other services from Johns Hopkins with no issues. This department will cause a mood disorder. My advice is to look elsewhere.

This is the worst experience i have ever had. If I could give zero or negative stars if I could for this particular stay at John Hopkins Hospital. I ran to john Hopkins for help. I was told that me insurance wouldn't cover my stay there. I told them the truth which they already knew. i have stayed there before so I thought they would help. Long story short they sent me to franklin square between the two hospitals my phone and planner which is the little I had left was taken. when i left franklin square I realized I was missing my phone I called the security with atwater cab drivers phone franklin square hospital told me to go to Hopkins I went to Hopkins they had everything but my my phone. I sat on the floor in disbelief. Then the security got rude and eventually escorted me out. I cant contact me family, I cant trust doctors or staff at this hospital. I went to Hopkins for help they clearly don't care. i left both establishments ten times worse than I went in. I left franklin square without my planner wich was a personal fail journal. When I was at psych emergency room at John Hopkins they took my phone after allowing me to write a few numbers down. I have to adapt to my mental health issues which have worsened because of this experience. They didn't even want to feed me before sending me to another hospital even though I asked multiple times for food and was laying right next to the nurses circle desk. Maybe i should have focused more on my belongings than eating lunch.

The head of department @Pamela Collins @John Campo @Helen R. Stulman please have staff review the mission statement of the Ped's Psychiatry Department at the Hospital. My son spent almost 3wks as in patient, which was difficult for him and I. Just to receive referrals/resources that has led to a dead end before. The resources that social workers give to parents turn into a closed door. It's soo difficult on families such as myself, my son is 17yrs old and I've put in the work as a a parent that led in the wrong direction. There are children that really need the help but can't get it, parents wanting results but are led in the wrong direction or cases are overlooked. I am an educator and advocate for young children and I see the struggle in the Baltimore community. Regardless if they have health insurance, Children with mental health, need services and supports at their younger years. Hopkins have what it takes to save our youth. Therapy in schools for children with IEP's ran by fellows and clinical social workers, as a case study, billing the insurance could change the scope of things. This will bridge the gap for children with special needs. Thank you for listening.

At the Myers 4 Mood Disorder Unit, most of the nurses, nurse assistants, and occupational therapists work together as part of the gang team and are proud of the quality of their verbally abusive care that they bring to their patients. If you have a handicapped child, do not trust these people. Human Resources is not doing anything because the supervisors are careless.

I had two rare medical diagnosis that I was struggling getting support for so I became super depressed and stopped eating. I begged for them to take me seriously and help me find answers but everything was about being crazy with them. They don’t take into consideration that some things have a medical cause vs a mental illness. They somehow talked me into ECT treatments but they refused to do an MRI to make sure the complaints of intense headaches were not from a serious cause. I went through 7 weeks of treatments 3 per week and I kept saying I can hear water in my head. Turns out I had a brain stem compression and the water I heard was CFS (brain fluids) trying to squeeze through a malformation because the ECT caused my cerebellum to descend down into my brainstem compressing it. I lost short and long term memory, permanently. Writing, spelling, math all gone and I can not learn it again. I have had several surgeries to correct the problem but the damage is permanent. All this ultimately destroyed any chance of a good life for me. I’m basically useless and empty of a past and I can’t retain the current. Thanks Hopkins!
