I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist and have referred several clients to Dr. Memon. They often tell me how calm, knowledgeable, and respectful he is, and how comfortable they feel in his care. I really appreciate his collaborative style and clear communication, which make it easy to work together. I’m always confident recommending him to people looking for compassionate, thoughtful psychiatric support.

Engaging with Dr. Shoaib Memon was an awful experience. Having just moved to Chicago, Shoaib was the first psychiatrist I got an appointment with. My first appointment, wherein I needed to refill my Fluvoxamine Rx (severe OCD), he changed the prescribed quantity from 180 to 60 (3 months to 1 month effectively). I'd been on the same dose, of the same drug, for years. That was fine in the immediate-term, as running out of medication is literally a crisis-level event for me. It became "not fine" after the first couple appointments, where Shoaib would NOT increase the quantity when asked. In short, I would be required to see him monthly, at minimum, onsite, downtown, to get the next 30-day supply. Anyone who struggles with disorders of the mind and relies on medication for daily living understands this is completely untenable, if only psychologically; the feeling of running out of a medication that keeps you glued is NOT a good one. You'd think a psychiatrist would understand that. In the end, I had an emotionally-charged conversation with him about the above, he showed what I believe to be an appalling lack of empathy and emotional intelligence, and we parted ways. This scenario was a couple years ago. Psychiatry should help, not hurt; don't be scared to find someone/somewhere else if you aren't getting the care you need (and are paying for)...

Dear Dr. Shoaib Memon: The Muslim Community Center, Counseling Committee thanks you immensely for making the time to address our membership on September 30, 2024 on the topic of, “Why Therapy Works”. You were very instrumental in describing to the audience what to expect from psychotherapy, demystifying it and removing the stigma associated with seeking mental health services. Dr. Shoaib you were very articulate in describing the various forms and modes of therapy and the difference in psychiatry and other mental health disciplines. Everyone present felt very comfortable interacting since you kept them engaged, encouraging questions from them. By the end of the presentation, people wanted you to go on and clearly wanted you to come back for more discussion of mental health issues. We hope to see you back with us again soon. Thank you very much for volunteering your expertise with our community, without any monetary compensation. Sincerely, Zehra Ansari, Chair, MCC Counseling Committee
